It’s true that there are only a handful of “natural” hair colors, but even those few shades, like black, brown, blonde, and red, have thousands of slight variations that make your hair totally unique. It’s a big wide world of hair out there, and we’re here to share some follicle facts:
- The vast majority of the world has dark brown hair. Dark brown hair is the most common hair color in 101 countries.
- Black hair is the second most common hair color, being the most common color in 48 countries.
- Brown hair is the third most common, topping the charts in 48 countries.
- Blonde hair is relatively rare, being the most common hair color in only about 3 countries.
- Red hair is the rarest of all, with only 2% of the world’s population sporting it. It’s not the most common color in any country.
- According to some surveys, up to 75% of women in the US dye their hair each year.
- Bleaching or going blonde is the most popular hair dyeing method.
- Dyeing hair to other natural colors, like brown or red, is the second most popular, while dyeing hair unnatural colors like green, blue, purple, pink, or another color is the third most popular method.
- The same pigment that colors your skin and eyes—melanin—also colors your hair.
- Darker hair contains more melanin, while lighter hair contains smaller amounts of melanin.
- Your natural hair color can change as you grow older.
- Infants often have a different hair color within months of being born.
- Your natural hair color can also change with things like sun exposure or stress.
- Your hair color is an inherited trait, meaning you get it from your parents.
- You also inherit things like when you’ll go gray, and when your hair might start thinning.
- Gray hair isn’t actually gray, or at least there’s no gray pigment. Gray hair is really the lack of pigment.
