Understand Spotify's shuffle behavior

Does Spotify play the same songs in order, even during shuffle? If your Spotify doesn't feel random, you're not alone; there's a way you can vote for a better shuffle. If your Spotify isn't shuffling due to a software error, we'll show you some ways to troubleshoot it. Here's why your Spotify shuffle is not random and what you can do to fix it.

Making Spotify Shuffle Completely Random

Spotify doesn't have a true randomizer for the shuffle; it's based on song popularity and past listens. You can use the Smart Shuffle feature to add new songs to your listen, or you can vote for a pure shuffle feature on the official Spotify forums.

Why Is My Spotify Shuffle Not Random?

  1. This feature is meant to seamlessly blend songs into a playlist you want to hear based on your past listens, but it can be frustrating when you want to listen to songs in a different order. As of right now, there's no way to force Spotify to change its shuffle other than the new Smart Shuffle feature that suggests new songs while you listen.
    • If you want Spotify to add a pure shuffle function, you can vote on a Live Idea that suggests this feature. Do the following:
      • Go to the Live Idea community post.[1]
      • Click or tap VOTE on the right side.
      • Log into your Spotify account if prompted.
      • Your vote will be added. If enough users support the idea, the Spotify team will work to implement it.

Troubleshooting

  1. Your cache contains information about your listening history, searches, and more. If you've never cleared your cache before, Spotify may be taking up more storage on your device than it needs to. Do the following:
    • Select your profile icon.
    • Select Settings.
    • Scroll down to Cache.
    • Select Clear cache.
  2. Bugs can be unpredictable and may affect the shuffle.
  3. Select your account in the top-right corner, and then select Log out. Then, enter your information again.
  4. Check DownDetector or the official Spotify Twitter (X) for outages.
